I read Alentejo Blue when it first came out last year. It was not well received by some critics and was compared unfavourably with the best seller, Brick Lane, Ali's previous book. I read it, then, with some trepidation, but was thrilled with what I read. She takes a prism to a small community and refracts lives and moments in precise and often amusing ways, but always with perception and understanding. It may be that the frequent use of some fairly common Portuguese words made it seem like an old friend from the beginning, but I thoroughly enjoyed this intimate little book's view of the world, as seen from a small village in the Alentejo.
Dear readers
Many thanks for the readers that attended our last meeting on the 18 April. It was excellent and people were enthusiastic and committed. I'll email readers informing about book availability in the bookshops.
Next Monday we are celebrating the World Book Day. At the British Council we'll be offering books and roses to our visitors.
Isabel Lopes
Keep up the good work.
